Students
who would like to pursue an academic course in the US need to
acquire a students' visa to gain entry into the United States.
There are three types of Student visas:
- The
F-1 which is issued to students attending an academic
program or an English language course.
- The
J-1 visa which is issued to a student who aspires to
acquire
practical training that is not available in his country.
- The M-1 is issued to someone who is
going to attend a non-academic or vacational school.
The requirements presented here however
apply primarily to the F-1 visa which is the most common for full-time
international students. If you would like more information about
the other visa types, visit our Links section for websites that
carry more indepth information about them.
For you to be granted a US Student's visa, you
need to satisfy the consular officials that you can fully financially
support your stay in the US as a student without working or dependance
on public funds. Although the F-1 visa allows for part time campus
employment, you can not use the projected income as financial
evidence when applying for a visa
Before you apply for a US students visa, you
also need to have proof that you have been accepted at an academic
institution. Typical evidence is an admission letter and a visa
application form (I-20) that the institution sends to you.
You may also be asked for evidence of payment
of tuition fee at the institution.
