Some Western countries offer special visa programmes for Highly Skilled individuals who are interested in taking up immigrant status (permanent stay) which would enable them practice in their respective fields in those countries.

Whereas each country definately has its own regulations and requirements for Migrant skilled persons, generally someone who applies for this programme should be able to prove that he fits the particular country's definition of "Highly Skilled". This is usually set to attain people who have sound educational accomplishments, sufficient work or employment experience, and those who have attained awards or recognition in their fields of expertise.

For these programs, most countries use a points based system where the applicant scores points in each category that are commensurate with their respective achievements in that area. In some countries, the applicants qualifications may be expected to be compatible with the country's standards in that field and they may be expected to get some certification from a labour agency in that country.

Typical areas that are usually considered for these programmes include the Sciences, Arts, Education sector, Business and sports.
